I took this portrait of my friend, Codi, at Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge in the Bitterroot Valley. We were out for the day, hiking and exploring. Often times in the spring the refuge is filled with new birds and it’s fresh and green. These cat tails were obviously left from the fall and became like puff balls, and Codi decided to be the model girl! The backlit cat tails made for a perfect background and setting. The sun was low but not too low. If it were too low, her face would not have been lit and it would have turned out as a silhouette. The changes of the season are really inspirational.
